Hi Elizabeth,
You dont know me, but I am a friend of Jonathan's. He recently told me all about your journey that has been becoming a triathlete. I have just recently decided test the waters (no partial pun intended) and train for my first Triathlon. What advice do you have for a newbie like me?

Hey Seth! Thanks for reaching out!! Congrats on making the best decision of your life...haha. tri will change you. my advice...swim, bike, and run. people will try and complicate the whole thing by giving you lengthy training plans etc. where there certainly is a sure "science" to racing and training...in the beginning-just get comfy in all three disciplines. Figure out how many hours per week you can train and then write a plan for each day. Don’t worry about your speed...your first tri is an experience not a race. Have you signed up for a race yet? If not--pick one and sign up now. It will make you accountable and give you a timeline. I can give you some suggestions for good starter races. Then just start working on all three disciplines. Get comfortable riding your bike and running off the bike. That is one of the toughest parts of tri training in the beginning--you aren't used to running after you've been biking. I always run off the bike--even if it’s only 25 min. Certainly you will find yourself running without biking first but don’t ever bike without running right after. I go from the spin bike right on to the treadmill. At first it’s going to hurt. But believe me--it will get to be second nature. Also--be reasonable about the amount of time you train in the beginning. If you haven't done any serious endurance activity-you are pretty vulnerable to injury. Go EZ for the first few weeks. Get used to working out for long periods of time. Build that base up before you start to increase the mileage. If you burn yourself out or injure yourself--your season is done before it even gets started. we can talk more if you like--again, are you local?

The answer to your question depends on what you mean by local. I live on second and clinton in Hoboken, and work down in the WTC area of new york. I would really like to ask you a thousand questions if you are in the area and could spare some time?
